Fern turns at the sound of footsteps

and is surprised

to find Joseph there

looking around the kitchen

his face holding the particular searching gaze

she’s seen many times before

on many different faces.

Coffee? she hazards.

He finds her face and smiles.

I am but an open book, I see.

For anyone else, she would merely

gesture toward the French press.

For him though, she does not dream

of doing anything other than what she does,

which is to proceed to make it for him.

Thank you, he says. I usually try to

stick to tea, but this morning I woke

up thinking of coffee.

Would you like it with milk? Sugar?

Yes. Milk, and a teaspoon of sugar,

please.

How about cinnamon? she asks, feeling bold.

Not everyone likes it, but I think it’s a nice

addition.

Certainly, he says, with a faint

smile. I’ll try anything once.

She has never focused on coffee

like this before

never been so anxious to get it right.

She mixes the cinnamon in with the milk

just enough to make itself known

and then stirs the mixture into the coffee.
